 Viata lui GUSTAV KLIMT conicide cu  Art Nouveau ,intr-o perioada cand Viena era una din cele mai rafinate si emancipate   capitalele europe , iar Klimt intra in istorie ca personajul emblematic al perioadei  "Secession vienesse "-Liberty .

perioada "aurie- liberty " se  termina in 1909 ,cand in lucrarile lui incepe sa domine culoarea  si  va fi infuentat de expresionisti germani , deja cunoscuti prin studentul lui , Oscar Kokoschka .

Tablourile lui Gustav Klimt sunt fascinante ca expresivitate, pasiune si senzualitate. La fel ca insasi viata pictorului, sunt dedicate femeilor. Traind cu mult inaintea epocii sale, pictorul a fost sarbatorit la Paris si condamnat la Viena, orasul sau natal, pentru stilul sau provocator. Eternele eforturi ale lui Klimt de a cauta perfectiunea, erotismul si iubirea se reflecta in toate operele sale si isi gasesc o exprimare cinematica in filmul care descrie relatia lui pasionala cu o dansatoare si actrita frantuzoaica.
Regizorul Raoul Ruiz ne poarta inapoi in anul 1918. Gustav Klimt (John Malkovich) se afla pe patul de moarte. Egon Schiele (Nikolai Kinsky), singura persoana care are permisiunea de a-l vedea, realizeaza schechiuri ale prietenului si mentorului sau.
